I posted this on another forum. This bit made me laugh espec:

"A popular habit of British Bangladeshi youth during Eid is 'cruising', which is especially prevalent amongst boys. (Girls generally content themselves with putting on make up, wearing sparkling kameez's and hanging out with friends.) 'Cruising' commonly means travelling across London in flashy cars such as Aston Martins, Ferrari F430s and Audi TTs. They are driven by the oldest teenagers of the group, with their speakers pumping out loud Rap or RnB music. Sometimes their occupants will also wave Bangladeshi flags from the car windows. During Eid, the police are on high alert due to reckless driving by some of these cruisers, whose cars are confiscated if they are caught. They note this form of British Asian reinterpretation is often repeated at weddings and school graduations, where it has become a tradition for the young Bangladeshis, where more than thousands of pounds are spent to hire cars for just a single day or two."

So funny yet so true!

lol! Good God - a bangladeshi wrote this for sure!

"Sylhetis are often stereotyped by others, they are described as wanting to only marry within the Sylheti community and not to marry 'Dhakayas'. 'Dhakaya' is a term used by many Sylhetis when referring to non-Sylhetis, this shows the differences between their language and cultural customs."

So true!

i love how the entirety of this article is based on compartmentalising people. Does not sit well with me...

Its a very factual depiction but yes, very compartmentalising as well - i guess boxing communities into instantly distinguishable, quite obvious characteristics is a given thing considering that stereotypes are always based on certain levels of truth. However, there are sub-communities within the sylheti community who do not 'cruise' or wave flags or get their aston martins confiscated on eid - these subcommunities tend to just spend it with their family and prefer an old vintage car or bicycle with a basket and flower over a shiny aston any day. lol
Unfortunately, for a non Bangladeshi reading these kind of descriptions and summaries of teh Bangaldeshi community, they are given only an overview, quite one sided image of a whole community which can be misleading. But i guess thats with everything in life...
:D

Perhaps it is "compartmentalising", but the "certain levels of truth" are earnt by the culprits who act as described.. and secondly, earnt by the rest of community who failed to address and resolve those issues. i.e. We failed to curtail the activities of the misguided, and to reform our community.

It was our responsibility to address these issues, right?
