Let us sit back and ponder for a moment. Let us assume that there is no afterlife and that there is no God. We are merely organisms inhabiting a very large rock, breathing and reproducing, eating and sleeping. And there comes a day when our organs will fail and we will decease to become nothing more than a decomposing corpse which soon dissipates into the fabric of the earth.
So what is it that we take from life after having lived for all those many years?
What becomes of all our memories? Those cherished moments to which we tried to cling onto throughout our life by means of photos, diaries and poems...
What becomes of all our thoughts and experiences? Our first day at school, our years of growing up, the emotional highs/lows, the day you got married, the first word of our child, our uni years and our career...
Do you hope that your life has somehow benefited someone else? Your family perhaps or your community? But if they are all to meet the same fate as you as a rotting corpse, and likewise to lose all those memories, experiences and sentiments, then my question to you is:
What is the point of life if we cannot take something from it? Why care about right/wrong if we all simply die without any consequences to face? Indeed, why care about anything at all?
