You have some nice photos. Good compositions.

I don’t think you need to use RAW now. That website looks good but there are a few simpler basics you can do to improve your images.

One is to use levels on every picture. On photoshop > (go to) image > (go to) adjustments and then select auto levels.

I’ve done it on one of your pictures. look below. mine is on the top. some things are so simple to do they don't make them into tutorials.

Image

It balances out the levels, makes the blacks richer. I use it one all my pictures.

And here is a tip for you two. Open photoshop and go to file and select “open as”. This will open a window. In that window select an image. This is the important bit. Select “open as” camera RAW. It doesn’t matter if it’s not camera RAW format. It will open the file as if it was a RAW file. This will give you sliders on the right hand side and you can play around with the exposure and other things.

have fun

This website is great for free photoshop tutorials http://psdtuts.com/
Every week they have an article, its interesting to see what they start with and then the end result :D

Thanks Mooktakim for the comment and the website! :)
However I couldn't see your pics from the links you gave - use the link right at the bottom of the page of each pic (or album) where it says "Show people this photo by sending them this public link: [link]" so I can have a peek.

These pics are amazing!
And yup I do use the auto levels (and other adjustment settings) in Photoshop...but for some reason I feel that's cheating - lol - I want to be able to capture great images simply by using the appropriate settings on my camera. You think its possible to do that and recreate something like that M R Hasan has done? With regards to the pics I took in Bangladesh I didnt tweak them on purpose - but yes you're right Abdul, it does make a huge difference (usually for the better) by using some simple Photoshop settings.

Was that just a camera shot or did you edit it in anyway (sorry I don't know all the technical terms just yet, though....learnt what noise means today! (thanks Abdul for that! lol))

Absolutely no "cheating" as you put it :)

Its just with my camera. Thats all. I don't have the time nor the patience to edit my photos LOL I barely even remove red eye (which i don't usually get if i take the pic properly).

You guys are much more advanced with photography then me here. I just like to take pics for the fun of it. If i make it too technical it won't be fun anymore.

I don't really care much about SLR, i just need a better zoom :D Right now i got no zoom lol so i have to move myself to the right position. Also, with camera's you can't do manual focus, and it normally takes longer to take a shot then SLR. so your usually just too late for the perfect image.

Here's a funny one. This one day i was at my cousins house in Bolton, and i was sitting on the sofa looking at the pics i got on my camera. Where i was sitting there was a window right in front of me with fairly decent sunset. so sitting on the sofa i took some pictures. Had to mess around with the angle and zoom so that the inside of the house became dark and the outside was light and visible. And this is the results:

Some of the best pictures i've taken was when i wasn't even trying :D I can't seem to take good pictures when i want to take them lol its very strange. It just has to happen randomly.

LOL! That must look really strange then when you want to take a picture of someones face - you'd literally be IN their face!
But yeah - exactly my point - I think its more satisfying to take a good picture than take one half-heartedly and edit it to make it look good.

Yes, one thing the pros use are Photographic filter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_filter

I use the polarizing filter (I know it's the american way of spelling it).

read up on it. They use alot of tricks.

Something to try at home

i took these pictures Saturday night.

you might want to try it. It would be fun for kids if you have any around. Find a toy or something with LED lights in it. in my case it was something that changed colour every few seconds. set the camera to manual; thats the focus, ISO settings, aperture and turn the flash off. Set the shutter speed to a few second ,15 to 20 is good and then wave the light in the air and see what happens.

try it.

check out my mate's flickr page/profile:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/elinorjones/

She takes a lot of pictures, as you'll see, a lot of it in low light (gigs 'n' stuff). She used Nikon I think, quite a fancy one, I don't know much about photography, picked up the odd bit, but have a look at her stuff anyway. I like it. She also takes pictures using the traditional film kind as opposed to the digital, they do give a bit more character I think and it's great cos you don't know how it'll turn out 'til you print 'em off.

Her stuff is good but she seems to have a old school attitude “I hate photoshoped stuff” as she says in her profile.
