Agreed, a six figure salary isn't much to aspire to these days but I suppose its the privilege of working with Sugar himself which is the real prize. Although saying that, how many apprentices have actually gone on to have fruitful careers with the Sugar enterprise?
I ended up with Helene 'the duffer' Speight on our work sweepstake..she's definitely a gone-r in the next task!
I was in last night's episode - I was in the background perving on the zonda - ooooooh!
I think your right ChunkyMunky, the real prize is working with Sugar... but would you really class it as a privilege? Don't get me wrong, I rate the man for becoming what he has, I truly do, and having a £800mill fortune is a testament to his success. I think your also right to question what has become of the successful candidates who did win the contest…. I’ve not seen or heard of any of them since.
I don't rate Sugar as a business man. Not these days. He's a relic, that belongs to the dark ages, to the early years of the technology revolution. Other than Amstrad what has he done of note?
The fact of the matter is, Sugar has been left behind as technology gathered pace. He lacked foresight & innovation and from a very healthy position in the computer market he lost his market share. Simply because he didn’t diversify into other areas that go hand in hand with his line of business, and failing to invest in research & development. He simply didn’t have a clue on where the market was heading! He could’ve branched out into any number of technology related areas from Software Development, The Dot.com boom, web related advertising, media outlets via the net, wholesale computers sales en mass like Dell, news delivery like Bloomberg, Retuers and a whole host of other things.
Actually most of his wealth now comes from property investments about £500million, which given by recent credit market conditions before the recent bust, a huge amount of the UK population have made money out of this. His wealth has been hovering around the £600mill to the current £800 million mark for the last 5 years. £200million….??? That’s a very very poor return for someone who is supposed to be a business mogul.
Put it this way… if he was the CEO of any one of the large investment banks here in London, I’m certain he would’ve been fired for his poor performance. Beneath the surface Sugar is still your traditional buy cheap sell high Del Boy himself, which of course there is absolutely nothing wrong with, especially if it makes you £800million!
Nice guy, generous with charity and very funny on the show… but definitely overrated in the business world.
But that’s just my humble opinion!
