Hi my name is Bishan, I am one of Tariq's close friends and he encouraged me to join the "restlessbeings" group. I have only had time to briefly look at the website but i like the intention, the vibe and what i see being done here. Well done guys and gals - i'm happy to be part of the community.

I myself have lived a very fortunate life, having grown up comfortably in UK, Saudia Arabia, New Zealand (having lived in the latter for my secondary schooling and university)

Two and a half years ago at age 30 I decided to go on a journey of personal discovery and went back to Sri Lanka the country of my origin to re-discover my roots, so to speak. I started off wanting to take a year out of my somewhat pressured career path (emergency medicine) as I was a little sick of just following the rat race, and do community work in Sri Lanka. I started doing this but soon moved into a pathway of medical research because a good opportunity to do some meaningful work (help reduce suicide deaths from self poisoning in rural communities) came my way. In addition to the research it has been a very challenging but at the same time rewarding journey of learning about the different cultures that exist in Sri Lanka, and I am now doing a PhD there (and have been here a total of 2 and half years - and loving it!).

Whilst I am a medical doctor training in emergency medicine, and a researcher, my passions are along the lines of policy change and development, education, peace promotion and exploring the powers of positive thinking! Also I am an anthropologist at heart.

I have a charity project which i am doing on the side (providing hospital equipment to a rural hospital in sri lanka), so i appreciate the work that you guys are doing -it can be hard work to see your dreams to completion, but we'll all get there in the end i believe - or at least hopefully make a difference in the journey.

I look forward to contributing some of my experiences as an eastern and western person currently living in the east - actually i prefer to think of myself as a "global citizen".

take care
Bishan :)

ps. my website for the charity is http://sldp.talasilas.com

I am still working on amalgamating this project with the international rotary club, so if you are interested in donation or know those who are - please just direct them my way via my email which is also on the website. Thank you

Hey Bishan

Welcome to RestlessBeings
Was a pleasure reading your post and even more so knowing you are an active member of the global family striving to make a difference.
Its nice to hear that you like what you see in RB - we are a young organisation with a long way to go but we are taking large strides at the moment and we hope, with our creativity, we can raise the awareness and funds we need to help pockets of people across the globe.

Your project sounds interesting - i envy you - it must be so productive for you to have your PhD running alongside a related project. I hope to do mine in the near future so maybe a year or more on field like you might be the exciting option.

Bishan, i am intrigued to find out about the progress of your project etc, so maybe your first bit of contribution to RestlessBeings could be a blog ? :)

We are looking for active members like yourself who have a passion for difference on a humanitarian front to contribute to our Blog page on the website http://blog.restlessbeings.org/

its also plus that you have your own project

so would you be up for writing a short peice of maybe 500 words on your eastern western experience and your project and time in SL ?

let me know :)

rahima@restlessbeings.org

p.s. - your absolutely spot on - if individually or collectively we can help communities across the globe, than change wont so such a utopian aim.

salaam all. as we all probably know a new goverment been elected in bangladesh and a british bangladeshi has been elected as a member of parliament. as they promised prior to election that they will help all the NRB
project. i think this is the right time to get some help from the new goverment about the dhaka project as they are still in their honeymoon period.

welcome on the forum.
great point, it is in fact the right time to contact the government. My priority is that we push the government to actually putting into practice the child protocols they have. These protocols are meant to protect children throughout the country as well as ensure they are accomodated and in education but unfortunately these protocols are not being excercised in Bangladesh. So as Mahbub has stated, whilst the elected party is in its 'honey period' we as an organisation and activists should get in there and make some demands.

Salaam brothers and sisters!

You should all be asleep now! My name is Kevin, you might know my sister Nancy in this organisation.
Anyhow i think what you brothers and sisters are doing is great, mashallah. giving kids that are less fortunate something to look forward to in their future and giving them a sense of being needed.
May Allah bless all off you!

Nite!! =D

Salaam and hello,

My name's Kamal, and if anyone can, Kamal kan. :P Er... sorry, I'm not at my most creative today, but I've got ants in my pants  and just came to see what restlessbeings are all about. I heard you guys are hosting an inter-org dinner to pool the talent and resources of all the internet forums in the UK. Sounds interesting, and I would like to come and eat as much as I can - woops, I mean help as much as I can. 8)
