anatoli puoi - good italian song
cendrillion - anthemic french song
chant of the islands - brilliant senegalese track
coffee houser adda - bengali song, awesome!
batwans beek - fan-dingo arab tune, millitantly brilliant
akhiyan milaoon - one of a handful of really good indian tunes. ( i dont like bollywood stuff generally, but had to represent a little)

I grew up watching old skool bollywood (ask my dad about the history of ol' bolly actors and actresses, scandals, he can fill you in!). can't remember much of the plot of the ones in the 70s and 80s and the ol' blaack 'n' white, but boy were they glamorous back then. and all the songs are absorbed by yo' lil' head. Like i mentioned beofre my dad has loads of the ol' first edition vinyls. Vocal ranges, instruments, glamour, emotional range, they had it all. And you stil get brilliant songs being prodiced now (don't put me on the spot, nothing comes to mind when you need summat most).

I also like stuff in the vein of Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh etc.

Anyone like Bloc Party? Radiohead? a lil' dizzee rascal?

yup really was into radiohead and dizee in a big way. However, for me, dizee's first album rocked, second was a bit of a let down and radiohead after ok computer never really rocked for me since. having said that i was gutted that i missed out on their gig in victoria park last week, my mate went and he said it was phenomenal.

my favourite bengali (calcuttan produced) film of all time is Pother Panchalli by Satyajit Roy. That is probably one of my all time favourite movies. And roy is like the king of directors!!!! Actually on the subject of movies, i know its a bit of the subject, whats your favourite? Mine is le appartment, they did a hollywood version called the wicker chair or whatever but it was soooooooooo crap in comparison to the eloquence of the original french film. vincent and monica are a brilliant double act!

saw dizzee rascal suport babyshambles last year at wembley arena, (the latter were a disappoint, nothing like they were initially when i first saw them at brixton) and i mustsay, dizzee was brilliant at getting the crowd going. yeah, my mate went to see radiohead but, er, she remembers next to nothing. sigh.

i rememebr watching pother panchali as a young 'un with my mum, bought it on dvd recently to watch again but haven't got round to it yet. do you remember ever watching the chess players? that's another one my old brain recalls from my youth (hehe, yeah, like i'm THAT old!) that i've to re-watch. favourite movies is a hard one, i work in film yet know next to nothing in the whole scheme of things! my fave films usually end up being adaptations from favourite books like a clockwork orange, trainspotting, tehre are actually better ones but I can't think right now er, I watch a lot of British stuff/comedies like the office, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (it's a HOOT I tells ya!), Only Fools and Horses, Mighty Boosh etc etc and now I think we're somewhat digressing from music!

There is this Bengali folk type band I quite like called Bangla, I ahve an album of theirs which is pretty decent. Anyone heard of 'em?

i havent heard of them. Aishee Sengupta is very good, trad mixed with a hint of modern and if you can understand the dialect properly, you'll love it.

where did you get the the pother panchalli dvd from? i would love to own a copy of that film!

thanks for the additional info

as for pother panchalli, good old brick lane! onyl unfortunate thing is the quality, i man it's an old film anyway and the sound quality doesn't help, you end up straining to distinguish the slightly muffled sound. But as long as you're watching it with no distractions, I guess it's an ok copy, or search one with subtitles. First I tried sourcing it from Amazon or summat but it wasn't in stock. The Chess Players is quite easy to get hold of.

i grew up on old balck and white bangla, pakistani and hindi films so lots of stuff influencing my current taste in music - crazily eclectic

stuff like Gita Data, Lata, Rafi (how can you not like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIB368rc ... re=related), Ravi Shankar and loads more...
.........................bangla filmi music is not the same anymore.

Anyways, I love Anoushka Shankar - awesome - I admire her http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjSJfvE7 ... re=related
