Hey everyone,

Hope you're well!

Network Bangla is proud to present 'Prothom Barshiki' - Network Bangla's One Year Anniversary Event, on Sunday 3rd August, at Mantra, London.

In true NB style, the event will consist of an eclectic mix of sumptuous food, fantastic entertainment, excellent guest speakers and of course, lots of networking!

Prothom Barshiki will take place during the afternoon, with the doors opening at 12.45pm and the event finishing no later than 6pm...

Tickets will be on sale very soon, and will be priced at £20 per person (up until 9pm, Sunday 27th July 2008), and £25 thereafter (until 9pm, Friday 1st August 2008). Tickets will be sold both on-line and in person, and more info will be available very soon! Unfortunately however, NO tickets will be available after Friday 1st August or on the door, and reserved tickets will cost £25 (irrespective of when they are bought), and will be posted out to you!

Prothom Barshiki will be almost one year (to the day) since NB held it's first ever event - the hugely successful 'Launch Event', at Stratford Town Hall, in London. The event will provide guests with an opportunity to learn more about NB, find out more about what NB has achieved over the past year, and provide an excellent opportunity to network with all the other attendees! Prothom Barshiki will also provide a platform to showcase both new and established Bengali talent, raise awareness of external organisations present at the event, enable us to raise some well-earned funds for a charitable organisation, and give us a chance to contribute more to NB and our community as a whole....

EVENT DETAILS:

Date: Sunday 3rd August 2008
Time: Doors open at 12.45pm (Event will finish around 6pm)

Venue: Mantra, 37 Crutched Friars, EC3N 2AE
(Tube: Tower Hill; DLR: Tower Gateway; National Rail: Fenchurch St)

Cost: £20/£25 (for food and drinks, entertainment, guest speakers, networking... and much more!).

Dress Code: Smart/Traditional

-------

Tickets will be available within the next few days, but once the details are out, please buy yours as soon as you can!

As this event will be held in a (very classy...) restaurant, ticket numbers will be limited... so please buy your ticket before they run out!

Hope things are good... and hope to see you at 'Prothom Barshiki' in August!

Identity and Art
TATE GALLERY
Level 2 Gallery: Latifa Echakhch
London

19 September – 23 November 2008

Latifa Echakhch

Latifa Echakhch creates sculptures and installations that explore the visual and architectural codes of identity. She makes allusions to Islamic geometric patterns and minimalism, colourfield painting, radical politics and the bureaucracy of residency visas, examining how even the most banal objects can be infused with cultural assumptions.

With thanks to the Institut Français for their support of this exhibition.
The Level 2 Gallery programme has been made possible with the generous support of Catherine Petitgas

One worth attending

BIOFUELS & THE FOOD CRISIS

Date: Sunday 10th August 2008
Time: 2.15pm to 4.45pm
Venue: London Mennonite Centre (Just off Archway Road), 14 Shepherds Hill, London, N6 5AQ. Nearest Tube: Highgate (Northern line): 5 mins walk: (Take the Archway Road exit).

Speaker: Helena Paul (EcoNexus)

The recent rush for biofuels is already having an impact on food prices. In this months forum we ask, why is this happening?, and who are the major players? We will also consider the context of biofuels expansion - attempting to address climate change without major lifestyle changes, and also helping increase farmers incomes - whilst reflecting on the reality of people in Indonesia being unable to find or afford cooking oil and the cost of rice provoking unrest in various parts of Asia, with India restricting exports. We will thus ask ourselves this fundamental question, How can we address the ever-increasing demand for affordable food and energy, when we only have one planet?

No charge and open to all.
About the speaker:
Helena Paul has campaigned on the protection of indigenous peoples' rights and tropical forests in Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil; also on agricultural biodiversity, oil exploitation in the tropics, patents on life and genetic engineering. She is chair of the GM Freeze UK and co-director of EcoNexus. She is co-author of Hungry Corporations: Transnational Biotech Companies Colonise the Food Chain. In 2006, she began to work on agrofuels, as part of a small group of organisations that launched the first call for a moratorium on EU targets and incentives, and imports from agrofuel monocultures to the EU, because of the grave threat posed by the rush for agrofuels to small farmers, local food production, biodiversity and climate. She also shared in writing and coordinated publication of a report from the same group: Agrofuels: Towards a Reality Check in Nine Key Areas, published in July 2007.

East African Scenarios: Imagining the Future of East Africa
Monday 20th October

5.30 pm
Room 116, SOAS

Since 1998, the Society for International Development's East African Futures Programme has engaged East African policy actors in a process of reflection on possible alternative futures for their countries and the region. These scenario-building projects have sought to create a better understanding of the structural dynamics shaping the region and to identify futures that it might have to face in the next 30 years. The final report was first presented in Kigali in April 2008 to the Prime Minister and members of the Rwandan Cainet.

RSVP ras_research@soas.ac.uk

In association with CAS and AFFORD.
