People,

I joined this group on facebook as she sounds quite interesting. She's going to be "performing" tomorrow night right down the road from where we're having the meeting so we could check her out, depending on how people feel.

"This group has been set up to celebrate the brilliance of the London based writer, social commentator and performance poet, Warsan Shire.
She uses her God given words to draw a mirror that she uses to reflect the worlds ugliness and flaws back upon itself to express her undieing love for humanity. She is truly an inspirational human and poet.
This group is for her fans and her contemporaries. Events of her up and coming shows will be put up. If you have not heard her then make sure you run down to her next recital and if you have you are probably already half way to her next show already."

Boycott Israeli Apartheid, Boycott Marks & Spencer

All anti-racists welcome, open megaphone

The weekly demonstration on London's busiest shopping street continues, raising awareness about the Palestinian struggle for their lives and liberation from Israeli terror, occupation and racism. Marks & Spencer is a huge supporter of Israel, both financially and ideologically, the British retailing company that trades the most with Israel. With Israel's ongoing brutal siege of Gaza and the fascist attacks on the people of the West Bank it is vital that we take action in Britain to fight against British support for the racist Zionist state and counter the British mass media's misinformation and silence in the face of daily Israeli war crimes and wholesale violation of Palestinian human rights. Get angry, get active, join the pickets.

Social Ecology London Study Group

Topic / Issue Environment

A study/action group meeting every Tuesday at 6:30pm at LARC in Whitechapel. We’re examining genuine democratic alternatives to capitalism, such as libertarian socialism, communalism, social anarchism and participatory economics. As well as wanting a more just society we feel that it is impossible to tackle ecological issues while ignoring the social context that created them.

PEACE BY PIECE
Date: Until Saturday 3rd May 2008
Time: 10am - 6pm
Venue: The Menier Gallery, 51 Southwark Street, London Se1 1ru

Photography & Storytelling Exhibition capturing some of the
sights and sounds of Islam in The London Borough of Southwark.

Photography by Rehan Jamil. The result of six months’ work with Southwark's
Muslim communities. It brings together the stories of 18 Southwark Muslims
in an audio visual installation that confronts stereotypes and celebrates
the contribution of Islam to Southwark’s rich cultural diversity. It also
reflects the challenging questions Muslim communities across the UK are
concerned with. As well as tackling head on the involvement of some British
Muslims in acts of terrorism, contributors also talk about the place of women
in Islam. Saima Mahmood, a final year medical student from Peckham, is one example
when she declares, "As a young Muslim woman I'm not prepared to be a doormat
for the media or other Muslims". Other storytellers include 10-year-old
Rumana Chaudhury, chairperson of John Donne Primary School Council; Professor
Dawud Noibi, Chair Southwark Muslim Forum, who thinks Islam is "a lot like a
Sat Nav system - except this one doesn't lead you down any dead ends"; and
Erbil Celebi, a London black taxi driver worshipping at Southwark's Turkish
Mosque on Cobourg Road, who believes that Muslim extremists and people
obsessed with wealth "have lost the plot in equal measure".

All welcome

Islamic Circles, The Radical Middle Way and Canary Wharf Muslim
Association (WharfMA) presents:

GLOBALISED BEFORE GLOBALISATION: THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE MUSLIM TRADER
With
Shaykh Habib 'Ali Zain Al Abideen Al Jifri (Dar Al Mustafa, Tarim,Yemen)*
Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (Cambridge)*

Date: Wednesday 7th May 2008
Time: 6.30pm - 8.30pm
Venue: Buckingham Suite, The Britannia International Hotel,
Marsh Wall, Canary Wharf, London E14 9SJ

By caravan, sea and on foot, Muslim traders spread wealth and faith throughout
the world - from the Silk Road to the Sahara and beyond. Their good conduct
and savvy business acumen helped create great societies. Their peaceful ways
won people over. In an age of so-called “disaster capitalism” what is the
role of Muslim business people in bringing good ethics and a spiritual
consciousness back to what has become a dog-eat-dog world?

*Habib 'Ali Zain Al Abideen Al Jifri was born into a family of noble lineage
extending in an unbroken chain to Imam Husayn (ra), the grandson of the Prophet
(saw). Habib 'Ali is from the Tarim, South Yemen. Nestled in the ancient valley
of Hadramawt, Tarim has been a center of learning and spirituality for centuries.
Habib 'Ali received a classical Islamic education from the illustrious scholars
of Hadramauwt, embodying a methodology which crystallizes the middle way of
Islam, Islamic Jurisprudence, a respect for the differences between jurists
and a spiritual education drawn from the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Habib 'Ali
is Founder of the 'Taba Foundation for Islamic Studies and Research' based
in the United Arab Emirates. He is also a lecturer at Dar Al Mustafa, Tarim,
an educational institute established for the study of traditional Islamic
sciences. Habib 'Ali is continually invited to lecture in many countries
across the globe and appears regularly on a variety network television
and radio programs.

All welcome to attend and free entrance
