You can all place every single action of yours into one of these broader 5 categories, and then try to place them in one of the sub-categories.
1. Obligatory: commanded to do and sinful if left out:
- Fardh: something which has been explicitly commanded either in a Quranic verse, a hadith of the Prophet or by Consensus of the Companions. i.e. the command to pray.
- Wajib: something which is not explicitly commanded, but is implicitly mentioned OR is implicitly required (derived by scholarly analysis). i.e. marriage is actually a Sunnah, but due to the implicit fitna of not marrying (temptations, etc), scholars have ruled that it is an implicit obligation (as long as the fitna or temptation exists).
2. Recommended: Rewardable actions, but not sinful if left out (except for Sunnah Moakkedah):
- Mandub/Mustahab/Nafl: something which was not as encouraged by the Prophet, but encouraged nonetheless. i.e. nafl prayers, general zikr (such as glorifying Allah generally).
- Sunnah: something that the Prophet specifically did and encouraged others to do. i.e. normal Sunnah prayers, to smile at others, to fast on particular days, specific types of zikr at specific times, etc.
- Sunnah Moakeddah: something that the Prophet did and strenuously encouraged others to do. i.e. the Sunnah prayers at Fajr, etc. Considered to be sinful by some scholars if left out.
3. Permissible: neither rewardable nor sinful.
- Muhbah: Sitting around, talking about general matters, walking down the street, sitting in a plane, divorce! Anything which is neither obliged, recommended, disliked or prohibited by Islam.
4. Disliked: Generally not sinful if committed. According to some scholars, if committed repeatedly without any consideration, it could be sinful.
- Makruh-Tanzihi: Minor-dislike. Not sinful, but merely disliked and discouraged. i.e. to spit on the ground. Can be elevated to Makruh-Takrimi if repeated again and again.
- Makruh-Tahrimi: Major-dislike. If done repeatedly, then it is sinful. i.e. Smoking! (a single pull is not sinful, but due to its nature of repeatedly taking a pull, it becomes sinful of course). Requires repentance.
5. Prohibited: That which is commanded or mentioned NOT to do - sinful if committed.
Haram: Sinful if committed. i.e. premarital sex, alcohol, etc. Requires repentance.
